SWITCH FABRIC TOPOLOGIES In the last section, we described several switch fabric architectures along with the limitations in implementing these architectures based on factors such as chip technology. For these basic network building blocks, a primary limitation is port count. Data center networks require tens of thousands of high-bandwidth endpoints while the best chip technology can provide around 100 high-bandwidth ports.
As frequencies are increased past a certain point, a single wire on the bus needs to be treated like a transmission line. But, by its nature, a bus has multiple stubs along the transmission line, causing signal degradation due to difficult termination and reflection issues. Because of this, shared busses must be limited in either maximum frequency or the number of devices connected to the bus. Increasing the width of the bus also provides design challenges. Increasing the bus width increases the pin count in both the device package and the board connectors and increases the board complexity, leading to higher system costs.
