George Buchanan was William's great grandfather. 4 Within months of its admission to the Union in 1803 George Buchanan had determined to abandon his birthplace near Natural Bridge, Virginia, and join the expanding migration of Scotch-Irish and Germans to the waiting American Eden. Placing his new bride on horseback, he escorted her across the mountains of western Virgina, settled her for a short time in the burgeoning Ohio River port of Marietta, and hurried on to Deerfield, a few miles north of Cincinnati.
On his last day in office (25 January 1909), while his righthand man was still on active duty in Caracas, Secretary Root recorded his appreciation of Buchanan.
