As we shall suggest in various ways in the present study, for Bowen, people are figured, characterized, given identity, precisely by the thought of the dead - their thoughts about dead people, and dead people's thoughts about them. Lois 'thinks of herself as forcing a pass' through the laurels: High u p a bird shrieked and stumbled down through dark, tearing the leaves. Silence healed, but kept a scar of horror. The shuttered-in drawing-room, the family sealed in lamplight, secure and bright like flowers in a paperweight - were desirable, worth much of this to regain.
The accumulative, estranging repetition of 'clock' - together with the syntactical isolation of 'ticking' at the end of this still-life sentence evokes a kind of hollowness and disquiet. The description intimates the sense of a disturbance of temporality which is not reducible to an opposition of 'silent' or 'ticking', a mobile or immobile clock. Such a disturbance, we would suggest, does not conform to any horology, or even to a simple failure or negation of the horological. Rather, this disturbance, this movement, is at the same time death; it is a move- Shivered 27 ment of otherness within the present; it is, among other things, the movement of widowing, marking the silence or death of the heart.
These pages of the text eventually come to cite their title, specifically referring to 'Gerald's departure' (LS 193), in other words to the painful breaking-up of Gerald's relationship with Lois, his departure from the house called Danielstown and from the family occupying it. But there is a last sense of 'departure' - a sense inextricable from the last' of the novel's title - and this concerns the revelation of Gerald's death: 'death' thus comes to remark or replay 'departure' in the title Shivered 31 'The Departure of Gerald', revealing a deathliness and otherness from which no notion of departure can ever truly depart.
