Many of them are formulated in terms too general to be useful in the debate as to whether these activities can open up new prospects – within the limits permitted in the situation of contemporary Arab societies: the political forces they use, the margins of liberty allowed by the autocratic state, the means they employ to go beyond these limits. It is necessary also to take into account the extreme heterogeneity of the associations. Some observations are in order here, resulting from all the studies and discussions on the subject.
