Castro summoned Frémont and told him to get out of California. The Pathfinder refused. Instead, he ordered his men to build a log fort on Hawk’s Peak, just north of Monterey. In March 1846, Frémont and his men raised the Stars and Stripes over the fort, declaring the territory the property of the United States. Castro responded by moving his own troops into position around the fort. A battle seemed likely, but tempers cooled when Larkin stepped in and assured the nervous Mexicans that Frémont had no hostile intentions.
1827 John C. Frémont enrolls in Charleston College, South Carolina. S. Navy vessel Natchez; the experience aboard ship whets his taste for exploration. S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. S. senator Thomas Hart Benton. 1842 Leads his first expedition of the Oregon Trail as far west as the South Pass in Wyoming. 1843 Explores a vast region composing Utah and Nevada as part of his second expedition into the Oregon Territory; names the region the Great Basin. 1845 Newspaper editor John L. O’Sullivan first uses the term Manifest Destiny.
But at this stage in the conflict, the president feared Frémont’s act would anger people in the Northern states who had not yet accepted the Civil War as a conflict to end slavery. Lincoln was forced to remove Frémont from command. Later in the war Frémont served as commander of the Union armies in West Virginia, but a series of losses eventually forced Lincoln to turn over Frémont’s troops to another general. Frémont resigned from the army in 1862. He sat out the rest of the war in New York City.
