For some, separatism has a livelier appeal, or at any rate allegiance to a unit not familiar in the geography of orthodox nationalism. In the United States, black spokesmen have insisted that Afro-Americans are more Afro than American; and militant women have resisted the idea that they share the same set of values as the American male. It would be misleading to imply that historians' interpretations of the American past are in chaos. There is still a wide measure of agreement on broad propositions, such as that America grew out of and then away from Europe, under the pressure of new circumstances.

Tocqueville's Democracy in America is in more ways than one a classic piece of theorizing about the New World. But often it is a diagram of contrasting theoretical distinctions between 'democracy' and 'aristocracy', instead of an actual analysis of conditions in America and Europe.
