Personal honour includes such qualities as courage, character, credibility and integrity, and is perhaps the most fundamental element of moral authority. Keegan’s analysis of warfare in different epochs finds that honour is ‘paramount, and it was by establishing ones honourableness with ones fellows that leadership was exerted indirectly over the common soldiers’. 38 Thus, even to writers who do not specifically address the role of effective leadership as a primary thesis, the overwhelming importance of personal honour, particularly courage, as a key to a commander’s moral authority is acknowledged.
A military genius operates outside of and rises above all established rules. It is the ‘intuition of the military genius’ that allows him to devise the ‘complex interconnections in war’. 61 Although many theories and models to explain the phenomenon of leadership effectiveness have been advanced by military writers and social scientists, no consensus on a precise definition exists.
