Air or gas entrainment If a high volumetric content of air or gas is present in the pumped liquid, this may cause a deterioration of the pump performance that must not be confused v^ith cavitation. It is generally agreed that, starting from ~ 2 % of gas content by volume, some deterioration of the pump performance starts to appear and that the maximum possible air or gas content that a conventional centrifugal pump can handle is typically betw^een 5% and 10%, beyond v^hich it v^ill progressively lose prime and stop pumping.
