In fact, it was not until the middle 1800s that states began to introduce laws licensing the practitioners of medicine. Allopathic care from the colonial days and into the second half of the 1800s was quite limited because all of the scientific advancements that we are familiar with today had yet to be discovered. Doctors typically provided first aid for broken bones, cuts, dislocated joints, and various other kinds of trauma. For infectious diseases, disorders of the internal organs, and other maladies, little could be done.
