The most significant angle is the steepest in that this is associated with a critical equilibrium. One way of approximating to this is to measure a drained angle, and this has been found to vary with the geometry of the heap, increasing from the conical through the flat to the crater shape. It will be seen later that geometry is also a factor in determining the angle of sliding, which is a characteristic of flowing bulk solids. For the present it is to be noted that although the angle of sliding is apparent during the time when heaps are being formed, it is not the same as the angle of repose, being always steeper.
