Assurance of consistently reliable food quality and safety assumes greater complexity as genetic modifications to crops and livestock create unfamiliar food materials; as spatial and temporal distances between producers and consumers progressively expand. Starvation, Malnutrition and Food Security Stevenson (1958) defined acute starvation as a complete lack of food of caloric value; chronic, partial or semi-starvation as a state in which some calories are available, though quantitatively less than are required for health and activity.
