Formulate Given a real-world problem, our first task is to formulate the problem, using the language of mathematics. The many techniques used in constructing mathematical models range from theoretical consideration of the problem on the one extreme to an interpretation of data associated with the problem on the other. For example, the mathematical model giving the accumulated amount at any time when a certain sum of money is deposited in the bank can be derived theoretically (see Chapter 5). On the other hand, many of the mathematical models in this book are constructed by studying the data associated with the problem.
