CAUSATION Coeliac disease is one of the many malabsorption conditions found in both adults and children. There are a great number of these conditions - some mild, some serious, some temporary, some permanent - in which the malabsorption of food is the basic cause. Coeliac disease is one in which there is an allergic response of the small intestine to the substance gluten, which is found in wheat and wheat products. Some sufferers are also allergic to a similar substance found in barley, oats and their products.

Secondary infection of the rash, due to scratching, is the most usual complication of this, mainly mild, disease of childhood. Antibiotics may be necessary if this is severe. Pneumonia can occur in adults or immunosuppressed children with an attack of chickenpox. Children without other underlying disease will not suffer from this complication. Encephalitis is a further possible, but rare, complication. PREVENTION There is at present no immunization available against chickenpox, although research into this possibility is taking place.

A mixture containing glycerine, honey and lemon is suitable, and can be obtained from pharmacists. (Other proprietary cough mixtures, many of which have a cough suppressant action, are not advisable. ) If the child with bronchitis is particularly wheezy, medication to dilate the bronchi can be prescribed to good effect. Attendance at school should cease until the worst of the cough has cleared, and the child is feeling able to cope with the physical demands of school again. In an uncomplicated attack of bronchitis the cough will clear within a week to 10 days, and the child will return to full health.
