Although Cody will forever be remembered for the Wild West, he had interests and projects outside of the showground and these projects offer further insights into the role Cody played in the interplay of the West of history and the West of mythology. The Wild West was in many ways a means of funding the other ventures he engaged in. Outside of the entertainment industry, Cody’s most significant project was that of developing the town of Cody in Wyoming. In his scouting days he had developed a love for the land of the Big Horn Basin.

His involvement in the gold rush, and the Pony Express were only the beginnings of his frontier career. Cody’s career as a scout during the Civil War brought him to public prominence; it was this work as reported in the newspapers that established his persona as an exemplary frontiersman in the public eye. At the beginning of the war, keeping a promise he had made to his mother not to enlist in the regular army, Cody joined an informal militia responsible for the defense of Kansas against guerillas such as those led by the infamous Colonel William C.
