Lyubov is successful as a dialogic character arguably, for the very reason he sees himself as a failure: he achieves no reconciliation. He is an embodiment of the dialogue in the narrative. Lyubov’s role as bridge between the space of Terran and Athshean, human and animal, self and alien, makes him useful in the narrative in a dialogic sense, despite any judgments regarding his depth or morality as a character. Selver—“creechie,” Athshean, “Man,” “hilf,” alien, god, and dreamer— is, like Lyubov, a bridge, though in other ways.

These isolated third wheels tend to either fall away or meet with bad ends: Haber, Davidson, Vera, and Wold all end up left behind in one way or another in their respective stories. By having only a few focalizers, these novels provide a focus on a few important characters and help us to understand in some detail how each perspective is informed by the other(s). Meaning and purpose are negotiated. The real point of the game is to ally at least two of the characters in a purpose—to make it clear that alone we are not likely to find home.

This is not unusual for Le Guin, but Orsinia tales (and, indeed, all of her story-suites) differ from her novels by having mostly single focalizers. More than half of the twelve use single focalizers, and only two tales have more than two focalizers. One explanation is that like The Dispossessed, The Telling, Rocannon’s World, and City of Exile, these tales of Orsinia tend to be about isolation. Even further, they are sad but hopeful tales of the attempt to connect to others in a country whose history is one long failed journey quest for identity.
