Formalism It is perhaps arguable whether formalism constitutes a reading strategy—at least in the same sense that feminism, materialism and deconstruction certainly do, and that structuralism most probably does—in that with formalism there is no overt philosophical foundation or commitment from which the strategy draws its strength.
