Nor would most people want to, considering the assortment of dinosaur bones recovered from these Jurassic rocks. Instead, geologists gather all the information available from the rock record, including composition, textures, and structures in the rock. These scraps of information are then pieced together to produce the clearest, most accurate picture possible. From this partially reconstructed puzzle, we must interpret the physical setting for these long-ago times. Interpretations are backed up by observations of modern geologic processes and their products.

A special type of reverse fault is the thrust fault, which forms when the angle of the fault plane is less than 30°, causing one side of the fault to be thrust up and over the adjacent block (fig. 4C). 4.  Thrust faults typically form in layered sedimentary rocks during extreme horizontal compressional stress. Page 12 Compressional stress and resulting thrust faults and folds have been the dominant mode of mountain-building in western North America over much of its geologic history. However, the stress regime has shifted in the past 30 to 20 million years to a dominantly extensional regime characterized by normal faults.

Relative age determination is based on the vertical relations between various rock units. Put simply, a sedimentary or volcanic rock unit is younger than the rocks below it, but older than those on top of it. As rocks were examined in ever greater detail, certain fossils were recognized as characteristic of specific units and could be taken to represent a discrete period. These observations allowed sedimentary sequences containing these fossils but separated by large distances to be correlated with respect to time; widely separated strata with the same fossils could be assumed to be the same age.
