He ordered a mighty artillery attack before his infantry charged. He gathered 150 cannons in the largest Confederate bombardment of the war. Around 1 o’clock in the afternoon, he launched this attack. For two hours Union and Confederate artillery battered each other. The roar was so loud, it was heard in the city of Pittsburgh. That was more than 150 miles (240 kilometers) away. Finally, the Union guns grew silent. Longstreet ordered three divisions, led by Generals George Pickett and A. P. Hill, to attack.
