On 31 March 1947 Qazi Mohammed and two other leaders were hanged in Chwar Chura Square , and eleven tribal sheikhs suffered a similar fate. It is probable 由at only 30 per cent of the administration of the short-lived Ku rdish Mahabad Republic were Iranian Kurds , the remainder having arrived from Iraq , Turkey and Syria. During the period of Soviet occupation the Iranian Kurds had been left to their own devices , so some claim 由at the Kurdish Republic in fact endured for about four years.
In both Iran and Iraq these military occupations often left Kurdish regions wi由 little or no central government control. In May 1942 the lawlessness of the Kurds in the Lake Urmiya region of Iran was wo口γing the Soviets, who were anxious about the security of their vital supply corridor.
