For our thinking ever to become "Christian" requires the intervening grace of God. < previous page page_30 next page > < previous page page_31 next page > Page 31 2 In Quest of a Theology of God God may speak to us through Russian Communism, a flute concerto, a blossoming shrub, or a dead dog. Karl Barth, CD, I/l, 55 In his early writings Barth was struggling to understand how theology could remain true to the mystery of who God is. How can the unfathomable God become the subject of human reflection and the object of human action?
A most noteworthy example of Barth's pursuing a more multidimensional approach occurs in his theological ethics, a subject to be discussed in chapter six. But there are others as well. In his survey of Protestant Theology in the Nineteenth Century, for example, Barth professed a desire to attend to "all the voices of the past," and not merely the ones which have stood in official favor. This is necessary, he said, because one cannot anticipate in advance which voices will speak to the genuinely "theological" elements in human endeavor.
The open-endedness represented by the wheel in the CD is just as unrelenting as in Romans. In the CD as in Romans, the theologian has no direct access to the mystery of the "center" itself. No theologian can venture closer to the "center" than this "inner periphery" that surrounds it (I/2, 868). Barth's point is that the theologian has no access to nor can stand within the open center itself but can only begin from that which falls all around the center. For Barth this "inner periphery" is the ongoing discourse of the believing community.
