And it is this tension that disrupts traditional understandings of selfhood, identity, the body and reality. It is for this reason that posthuman images can be appealing. It is because they are contradictory and unstable, not because they transcend the body or offer a better version of human existence. (2007: 4) 38 Technology and Identity in Young Adult Fiction This type of tension is patently evident in adolescent fiction that deals with the subject of technoscience. Posthuman YA narratives offer young readers and viewers a site from which to explore and question the various ways in which technology and science can affect human beings and the societies they live in.

This is an incipient but nevertheless significant thematic concern in very recent YA narratives, where innovative writers such as Cory Doctorow, Ernest Cline, Lauren Myracle and Jess C. Scott explore the development of adolescent identity in a virtual environment and construct subjective agency as a form of 22 Technology and Identity in Young Adult Fiction empowerment that is both embedded in the material body and defined by its collective nature. A collective sense of subjective agency is not common in either children’s literature or YA fiction, as both genres have traditionally followed humanist ideology in their advocacy of individualistic forms of agency and empowerment.

One of the more obvious examples of Ostry’s conflation of the terms “posthuman” and “posthumanism” is evident in relation to her contentions about the posthuman body. She comments that “the search for immortality is one of the components of posthumanism” (2004: 234), but this, in fact, contradicts posthumanism’s focus on the material body, which necessitates an appreciation of the finite quality of human existence. The posthuman body does, however, symbolise a transgression of the boundaries that have traditionally defined human life, because it signals a merging of the organic body with technoscience – but this point is never really developed in Ostry’s analysis.
