Follow these procedures—1. a. This condition is characterized by paleness, trembling, sweating, and thirst, and can accompany any injury. The more severe the wound, the more likely it is that shock will develop. b. If he is unconscious lay the patient flat on his back. Raise his feet unless he has a head injury or breathing difficulty. Keep him comfortably warm but avoid over-heating him. If the patient is conscious give him warm drinks. c. If you are alone and become seriously injured, lie down in a depression in the ground, behind a tree, or any place sheltered from the wind.

You can do this by inspection or with a compass. a. 1. Climb the nearest hill or tree. Look at the surrounding country, then at your map. 2. Turn the map until the roads, rivers, hills, or woods around you look as if they are in the same place on your map as they are on the ground. When your map lines look much the same as the land lines, your map is turned in the right direction—the north side of the map is toward north, the east side to the east. b. With a Compass. 1. Lay the map flat on the ground or other smooth, level surface.
