In 1983, the average length of stay (LOS) was 70 days (US General Accounting Office, 1979), the optimal LOS from the perspective of the hospice’s effectiveness both in terms of care and costs. In 2000, almost two thirds of patients received hospice care for less than 30 days, and one third of these patients were in hospice programs for less than a week before dying (Haupt, 2003). The decline in LOS has been attributed to a variety of factors, including provider practices, patient preferences, public awareness, federal oversight and regulation, and hospice program closure.
