A fourth is the development of a diverse local economy that involved something more than directly supporting missionaries or the military: Was it a place that traded with many other places? Did it provide commercial services for smaller, surrounding communities? 4 The catalyst was economic crisis in the 1640s, the second decade of Puritan colonization, when the outbreak of civil war between England’s king and Parliament in England commanded the attention and resources of English Puritans. As immigration and investment from England slowed, New Englanders had to find ways to directly support themselves.
The core retained its national dominance through the first half of the twentieth century. With only 7 percent of the land area of the United States, it held 43 percent of its population in 1950 and accounted for 50 percent of its income and 70 percent of manufacturing output. It was similarly the center of political and cultural influence. 6 In Canada, a narrow corridor from Windsor through Toronto and along the St. Lawrence River to Montreal exercised the same dominance. While the raw materials of the West stoked the growth of Chicago, New York, and Toronto, western city people increasingly worked to promote progressive urban reform and planning and to cultivate respectable “eastern” culture.
These were slower times for Portland and Winnipeg, Denver and Salt Lake City. This regional pause reflected a new stage in European American industrialization. The earlier decades of explosive growth had coincided with the rise of a steam and steel economy that manifested most obviously in thousands of miles of new railroads. 5 Mines and mills found it hard to compete against General Motors, DuPont, or Westinghouse for attention and investment. This shift followed the consolidation of an industrial core anchored by New York and Chicago.
