At any water level, Red Creek is tricky to run. It was the scene of many anxious moments for early river runners. The river emerges from the swift water of Red Canyon into Browns Park. Here the river slows and meanders easily for about forty miles. The valley is bounded on the north and south by steep mountain slopes rising about two thousand feet above the floor. The river is lined with cottonwoods and willows, and the many marshes on either side are home to thousands of waterfowl. Originally called Brown's Hole by the Anglos, it was known as O-wi-yu-kuts (Big Valley) to the Indians who wintered there.
Before going into Ashley's adventures on the river, however, it should be mentioned that his was not the first party of trappers to see the upper Green. The Snake Country Expeditions of the Hudson's Bay Company under Alexander MacKenzie had trapped there during the 1820-21 season. Ashley's lieutenant, Jedediah Smith, had also trapped Page 22 along the banks of the Green in 1824, but it was left for the General to be the first to travel down the river itself. 6 Ashley and his men reached the Green on Sunday, 9 April 1825.
For whatever reason, the fact remains that modern river running had its origins on the Green River. The Green flows through seven canyons and four large Page 12 Whirlpool Canyon. open areas, or parks, as they are known, along this stretch. Each has its own characteristics, its own rapids, its own dangers, its own beauties. In the sixty miles from the town of Green River, Wyoming, to Flaming Gorge, the first of the canyons, the river flowed through mostly arid clay hills. 10 Today the bottoms of these canyons, and indeed the whole river valley to within six miles of the town of Green River, are flooded by Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
