This development can be termed Sectarian Hinduism, Puranic Hinduism, and even Avataric Hinduism. The religious literature of the Hindus contains a genre known as the Puranas. Though the Mahabharata is known as itihasa (history, or literally, "so it happened") and the Ramayana is a work of kavya (poetry), they are more broadly viewed as one with the Puranas.
