Only then did a new sense of identity begin to take shape. During the period of confrontation with the Muslim presence, the concepts of ‘Europe’ and ‘Christendom’ were synonymous. According to Hall and Gieben, the cultural identity of Europe was initially considered Christian, but in the post-medieval era the concept of ‘Europe’ began to be identified in geographical, political and economic terms. This important development led to the formation of the idea of ‘the West’, which was characterized as modern and secular, but not to the extent that the so-called West completely lost its Christian origins and ties.
