I was in a sort of camp of caves, with sentries & picketed horses, & it was a dark night with rain, & the sky was all one running blink of flashes from the guns, going right up to mid heaven from the big ones, & then very bright on the crest from the field guns, but no noise whatsoever, though the sky was all on fire. This land is like that, & I do not understand it, for we were within range.

It is exactly as I say; an altar with a latrine in front of it & a memorial to the kameraden gefallen in front of the latrine. There is not ten feet between the altar & the memorial. I may be home in ten days from now, for my work here is finished, or very nearly, for the time, though of course I shall be out again a good deal before the end of the war.
