Germans were used on the `white' stations in some numbers, but could not of course appear on stations which were supposedly based in the UK. For the same reason, speakers could not be heard on the Concordia stations whose voices might be familiar to listeners to the official stations. Understaffed as they already were with competent English speakers, the Nazis had to recruit broadcasters and scriptwriters from among the small community of Britons who found themselves in Germany upon the outbreak of war, and from among those British prisoners of war who were willing to cooperate in return for their freedom.
William Joyce was born in New York of Irish Catholic parents in 1906, his father having taken US citizenship some years earlier. In 1909 the family returned to Ireland, settling in Galway. Despite their Catholic background, the Joyce family were renowned locally as staunch supporters of the British in Ireland, the boy William claiming later to have spied on his neighbours for the Black and Tans. After partition the family took flight and settled in England. William took a first-class honours degree in English from Birkbeck College, having been thrown out of the army in which he had enlisted while under age.
