In the eighteenth century, when Law, the French finance minister, took steps to reorganize the Compagnie des Indes (1719), and when Dupleix, the French governor-general in India, dreamed, vainly as it turned out, of establishing a great French colonial empire there, interest in all things oriental in France expanded rapidly.
More than two dozen French orientalists, including Venture de Paradis, Jean-Joseph Marcel and Dom Gabriel Tabril, were attached to Bonaparte’s expedition to Egypt.
