When the Warkaris go to Pandharpur on pilgrimage they are in fact admonished not to engage in the varied and elaborate rituals that Pandharpur offers by right of its being a tirtha of some note. On the occasion of the two largest Warkari pilgrimages in Ashadh and Kartik, when hundreds of thousands descend on the temple of Vitthal, the whole elaborate daily ritual of worship (puja)that normally surrounds the god is severely curtailed for five days in order to allow the Warkaris access, day and night, to the simplest ritual of all, darsan,standing in the presence of the god, seeing and being seen.
