But these are the Bears of Pappy Waldorf, men as devoted to their former coach a lifetime later as they were listening to his pre-game instructions in the late 1940s. What's almost eerie is that to everyone who knew Pappy, but especially to those who suited up for him, it all seems like just yesterday. Pappy died in 1981, but in the spring of 1999, the gang around that dining room table were still Pappy's Boys. If 50 years had passed since they had played football together, they hardly seemed to notice.
