Com 15) Theaters-Movie There is a tidal wave of change surging through the movie theater business. To begin with, theater companies in recent years have been building megatheaters, giant, freestanding boxes that contain up to 30 or more screens each. Many of these complexes feature such amenities as oversized seats that rise in stadium-like tiers so that patrons always have a clear view of the screen, digital sound systems, cappuccino bars and pizzerias. Since large numbers of screens are involved, the most popular movies are shown on several screens at once, with starting times conveniently spaced about 30 minutes apart.

That number now has dwindled down to 40. Though ticket prices and viewer spending is up from 1998, the larger number of screens and the multitude of multiplexes have caused attendance numbers, on a screen-byscreen basis, to drop. While the design of theater buildings is changing, so is the nature of their owners. Consolidation investment firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst joined Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts Co. to form a theater chain. The firms combined Act III and Regal in 1998, creating the largest movie theater chain ever, with 4,454 screens in 422 locations in more than 30 states.

Additionally, the size of a regular desktop PC places constraints on its usage away from a desk. Even video game-playing consoles are classified as computer-like devices.
