Instead, artworks were viewed in the form of so-called ‘reproductive’ engravings. It might be more accurate, however, to describe prints as the predominant medium of art, for although fine art engravers aimed to reproduce the appearance and atmosphere of drawings and paintings into the medium of intaglio plates for the fine print trade, artists, students and art lovers rarely saw the originals. Visual training came through prints. Even three-dimensional objects, for example the ancient Greek statue known as the Apollo Belvedere, were celebrated throughout Europe in engravings.

Furthermore, future progress would not be frightening, because it was rooted in past cultural production. This chapter considers the ‘default’ print technology of the first part of the nineteenth century that at first glance has clear links to Gutenberg’s process of 1450; letterpress accompanied by so-called ‘run-in relief’ illustrations. Production in this medium expanded tremendously in the period 1800–50 due to industrial methods of papermaking and the adoption of steam power. Self-help publications, aimed at improving and educating industrial workers, celebrated the very printing machines that had brought them into being, alongside a crash course in high culture, while conservative factions reiterated endless warnings of the dangers of universal education.

Although this aspect of graphic design history is less celebrated, recent design historians have now begun to examine this legacy of ‘commercial modernism’ that should now, according to Steven Heller, be recognised as the true ‘mother of graphic design’ (Heller 2001: 295–302). However, creating more inclusive versions of graphic design history will be something that is more easily said than done. Understanding commercial design in action requires an analysis of business and cultural networks, rather than aesthetic form.
