First we need to understand how two intellectuals on opposite ends of the earth arrived at similar views of the Bible. * * Rammohun Roy’s journey to renown in the world of biblical criticism began in rural Bengal with a youthful interest in rational religion nurtured by Islamic and Hindu influences. Rammohun’s religious identity is discussed in appendix A. Here the question is why did Rammohun stop localizing using a Deist framework and turn instead to Unitarian discourse?
