The spectator may believe that the look is about viewer location of and identification with the hero in his adventures. What this shows, though, is the massive investment in disavowal by popular cinema, rather than that the gazed-upon hero is always the subject, never the eroticized object. Gender plays an important role even in this different account of spectatorship, concerned with looking at a male rather than female object.
David Savran believes, on this evidence, that Bly's so-called 'mythopoetics' are firmly rooted in imperialistic fantasies (Savran, 1996, p. 141).
