But it was Marie Curie, in a profound sense, who spun out a new working world, a ‘radium economy’, in which the discoveries of the laboratory could be translated into commercial propositions and circulated back as laboratory material or out as forms of medicine. Radium, an element unknown before 1898, needed to be produced in macroscopic quantities if it was to be put to therapeutic use in the radium institutes. 25 The first gram was not available in France until 1910. By then, Curie’s Radium Institute was being planned on the rue d’Ulm; funded by the University of Paris and the Institut Pasteur, it contained two pavilions, one for Marie’s laboratory, the other for the biomedical research of Claudius Regaud, whose focus was on the treatment of cancer.

He must substantiate his discovery if he was to claim priority and the credit of the scientific community. November and December 1895 were spent in the laboratory. He sometimes did not go home to sleep or eat. His wife, Bertha, in fact visited him in the laboratory, and it was the bones of her hand, wearing a wedding ring, that were captured in a fifteen-minute exposure taken three days before Christmas. He persuaded a friend, the president of the local Physical Medical Society in Würzberg, to include a handwritten paper, announcing the discovery of his ‘new kinds of rays’, as a very late addition to the society’s proceedings.

Despite the domestic drama, Einstein was showing extraordinary talent in physics, but hopes of an academic career were dashed through a combination of anti-Semitism and conflicts sparked by Einstein’s own radical and anti-authoritarian streak. 44 With job security, Albert and Mileva married. They had two sons, born in 1904 and 1910. Popular histories of Einstein, written in the knowledge that he would become by far the most celebrated, iconic, instantly recognizable scientist in the twentieth century, have contrasted his lowly position at the Bern Patent Office with the incredible heights achieved in 1905, when he published four papers that, it is no exaggeration to say, mark a watershed in the history of the physical sciences.
