But it was Marie Curie, in a profound sense, who spun out a new working world, a ‘radium economy’, in which the discoveries of the laboratory could be translated into commercial propositions and circulated back as laboratory material or out as forms of medicine. Radium, an element unknown before 1898, needed to be produced in macroscopic quantities if it was to be put to therapeutic use in the radium institutes. 25 The first gram was not available in France until 1910. By then, Curie’s Radium Institute was being planned on the rue d’Ulm; funded by the University of Paris and the Institut Pasteur, it contained two pavilions, one for Marie’s laboratory, the other for the biomedical research of Claudius Regaud, whose focus was on the treatment of cancer.
