We need them; their imperfections and specialized nature limit what we can do, but nobody imagines that there is a final tool or instrument, like a genie in the 28 RESEARCH TRADITIONS IN PSYCHOLOGY Arabian Nights. Yet that is what the search for the final or complete theory is like. What I shall do now is to use Kuhn's concept of disciplinary matrix to analyse various classic traditions in psychology. 3 Research traditions and theories We see immediately that psychology is more like gang warfare than harmonious family life.
We say that a premise and a covering law imply a conclusion, not that they cause it. We say that, given the rules of arithmetic, 2 + 2 = 4 implies that 4 — 2 = 2, not that the one causes the other. Cause is a concept which is inappropriate to relations between mental events. Piaget's great contribution has been his remarkable observation of the ways in which children learn to classify, to conserve number and mass to test hypotheses, to follow rules, to make moral judgements. He is an imaginative experimenter, guided by certain heuristic assumptions.
On the other hand, a research tradition refers to 'much more general, much less easily testable, sets of doctrines and assumptions' (1977: 71). Research traditions may comprise several specific theories: the Marxist research tradition comprises more specific doctrines on economics as well as approaches to the analysis of social conflict; the psychoanalytic research tradition comprises specific theories such as the formation of the Oedipus complex, the origins of hysteria, and the origins of the 'self in infancy; the behaviourist tradition of research must contain specific theories about stimulus sampling and 'prepared' learning, or species-specific learning programmes.
