10 ātman disturbed 27 so-called discourse (saṃ vāda) with ātman expresses a noticeable flavor in our author’s dualistic perspective. Sāṅkhya-Yoga metaphysics informs the author’s voice in the metrical part of the Upad. The same is true in regards to Śaṅkara’s introduction to the BSBh. Indeed, scholars have noticed that ‘Śaṅkara cannot be said to have been really hostile to Yoga. ’11 The author of the BSBh succinctly expresses the same voiced dualism in the seminal opening phrases of his introduction to the BSBh: The object (viṣaya) and the seer of it (viṣayin), manifested respectively in the ideas of ‘you’ (yuṣmat) and ‘me’, are different from each other like darkness and light, and thus may never be identified.

Of course, such readings (which I label “confluent”) are not implausible; they have proved fertile, exciting, and invaluable. However, to explore the distinction between author and exponent is to free up a space for further speculation about the moods and variations of Advaita-Vedānta. This commonly held conflation of author and exponenet is consequential to descriptions of Śaṅkara’s philosophy or metaphysics. If, as I propose, the denomination ‘Śaṅkara’ as a unified source of vision or metaphysics is indeed unwarranted, the respective presentation of his metaphysics would be somewhat unwarranted (distorted) as well.

Does it signify metaphysics different in essence from an ordinary (exponent’s) Advaita? If we take ātman’s unprecedented first-person speech in earnest as the frame within which Advaita truth of the one impersonal Brahman is embedded, we begin to consider a level of reality from which speech originates, a level deeper than the respective impersonal truth. In other words, the enhanced reality of the commentator on the BS and the author of the Upad imply metaphysics significantly different from (or foreign to) the one announced by ātman (in the Upad) or the siddhāntin (of the BSBh).
