The realm in which the most eventful political dynamics occur is the strategic leadership or upper echelons of organizations because it is at the highest strata where organizations encounter the political, social, and institutional environments (Parsons, 1956a, 1956b) and because it is in that domain that executive committees, CEOs, and boards of directors decide on the most important organizational elements.

In fact, agency theory is one of the most interesting cases in the field of social and economic sciences, in that it generates the hard-core nucleus of an ideology – neoliberalism – that when put into practice gives greater impetus to the theory. (3) There were large increases in executive compensation packages. In the 1990s, boards of directors were charged with keeping executives in check as a mechanism for stopping the rampant self-awarded salaries. However, the apparent failure of some boards to control the salaries of CEOs and other executives has meant that it is now the shareholders who begin to voice disapproval of the compensation packages in their annual meetings.

We argue that from a contingency theory stance, roles are vehicles of differentiation, whereas relationships of differing nature and strength are mechanisms of integration. In this chapter, we seek to establish a bridge between the extensive scholarly work on roles and relationships and the literature on corporate governance and top management. It provides a review of pertinent work on roles and relationships that we believe can enhance understanding of the design and dynamics of small-numbers power structures.
