31 Blacks in parts of the United States South joined volunteer state militia organizations either during Reconstruction, as they did in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee, or after Reconstruction, as they did in Georgia and Virginia. These black units paraded in celebration of African American freedom, as African Americans in the northern states did during the antebellum period. The new day of celebration was “Emancipation Day” in the United States, which began with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, on January 1, 1863.
This unit, along with more than sixty others, became a member of the nineteenth-century Georgia Volunteers, Colored, the black contingent of the Georgia Volunteers, which was the official militia of the state of Georgia after the Civil War. Black militiamen were African Americans with stable employment as laborers, porters, carpenters, butchers, cooks, candy makers, painters, shoemakers, upholsterers, switchmen, and waiters. They, along with the independent black militia company in post–Civil War Georgia, used the militia to search for freedom at a time when white Georgians, too, sought a new place for themselves as citizens of the United States.
Public celebratory parading events were a central function of Georgia’s state-sponsored African American urban militia companies after Reconstruction. Freedom, citizenship, and a sense of belonging also defined the direction and goals of the postbellum black militia. Nation building, too, molded how the militia would be defined in the United States as the Civil War ended and as Reconstruction, post-Reconstruction, and emancipation evolved with the end of sectionalism and the start of nation building during the late nineteenth century.
