For the same reason that all schoolchildren need to master algebra whether they think they’ll ever use it or not, blacks must master the master’s world. They needn’t embrace it or even believe it; they must simply render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. And then subvert it from within if they are so inclined, something they can do precisely because they are within. Only the black nay-sayers and paternalistic whites, like that social worker, say otherwise: One of the great destructive shibboleths of modern literary studies insists that the canon is the exclusive preserve, the self-perpetuating creation, of Dead White Men.
White polls, if not white hearts, concede the basic tenets of antiracism. White hearts know that the status quo is racist; white hands are just having a hard time giving up all the goodies. Anyone would. Even so, it’s clear that they’re surrendering their right to a whiteness defined as control over nonwhites, as a preordained spot at the top of every pile, be it character, intellect, beauty, or talent. Together the two surrenders constitute a truce. All that’s left is to formulate a strategy for the peace.
In the West as well, racism was promoted by slavery, rather than vice versa. 6 Africa, then and now the least urbanized continent, remained prey to mass enslavement when other countries no longer were, simply because it remained defenseless,7 not because Africans were thought a priori to be lesser beings. 8 Logistics (sub-Saharan Africa is the only convenient place to obtain slaves) became ideology (blacks are slaves by nature, the weaklings). Antiblack racism was the by-product, not the cause, of slavery.
