However, I did find a cohort at the high school, a group of mostly young teachers who also became my friends. We partied together, went to films and plays together—sometimes with groups of students—but we also shared our concerns about being effective teachers. We asked each other for help and offered each other suggestions for good practices. We worked to create a meaningful classroom experience and encouraged promising students to find their strengths and establish goals. Our pleasure when we led students to an appreciation—even an excitement—about their studies, and to a consideration of education beyond high school was often blunted when promising students were forced by a parent’s loss of job, desertion of family, illness, or death to abandon their plans.
