Even today, the KKK uses violence and destroys property to express its members’ hatred for other races and religions. Americans have come a long way since Reconstruction. Today, citizens and government officials work together to protect the rights of people from all backgrounds. 36 Ulysses S. Grant, the leader of the Union army at the end of the Civil War, was president of the United States when the Fifteenth Amendment passed.
All federal troops in the South had to leave. Hayes had to promise that he would grant southern Democrats larger roles in national politics. All southern state governments were allowed to fall under the control of the Democrats. The future president approved these terms. Reconstruction was over in March 1877. UNEQUAL LAWS From the late 1870s to the mid-1960s, southerners who believed in separate rights for separate races passed what were known as Jim Crow laws. These local and state rules denied blacks equality in education and other day-to-day activities.
