But the body of the popular culture figure was growing in importance as the mirror of mass media and consumerism developed. The body that captivated reformers early in the century was not yet a popular or a mass body.
Images of less respectfully treated monarchs were counterposed by new images of everyday citizen-subjects. As a precursor to later popular culture figures, Thomas Topham, the son of a joiner who ran the Red Lion Inn near the Moorfield's Green boxing ring in the 1740s, was an early example of the commoner as an ideal of bodily perfection. 4 A common citizen with an extraordinary body, his defiance of body limits foreshadowed the idealization of the ordinary man's physique later articulated by the mechanisms of the Victorian sculpture machine.
