Further exciting discoveries will increase our understanding of oral biofilms at a different level.
Porphyromonas gingivalis, a member of the subgingival biofilm community associated with the development of periodontal disease, can downregulate specific immune mediators. For example, the presence of P. gingivalis in a ten species in vitro biofilm model was required to downregulate proinflammatory interleukin-Iβ and the NLRP3 inflammasome (Belibasakis et al. 2012), which are required for the effective elimination of bacteria by the host (Taxman et al. 2010). P. gingivalis is therefore suggested to use this strategy to manipulate the local inflammatory immune response and evade host surveillance with the ultimate benefit of survival at the host–biofilm interface (Bostanci and Belibasakis 2012).
