Forestry professors used to remind scholars that, while physicians bury their error, foresters die earlier than theirs are spotted. yet stable associations outlast the scientists who give a contribution to development them, and the half-century of labor of the USDA wooded area Service's Institute of Tropical Forestry (ITF) is in simple view: an remarkable corpus of accomplishments that will instill satisfaction in any association. there's scarcely somebody attracted to present problems with tropical forestry who wouldn't reap the benefits of a refresher direction in ITF's findings: its early collaboration with farmers to set up plantations, its successes in what we now name social forestry, its non-stop development of nursery practices, its screening trials of local species, its improvement of wood-processing applied sciences acceptable for constructing nations, its thorough research of tropical woodland functionality, and its holistic strategy towards conservation of endangered species. thankfully, ITF has a protracted historical past of data alternate via educating; like many others, I acquired my very own commence in tropical wooded area ecology fromjust this kind of path in Puerto Rico. And lengthy prior to politicians well-known the worldwide value of tropical forestry, the ITF employees served actively as ambassadors of the self-discipline, traveling tropical coun attempts far and wide to profit and, whilst invited to take action, to assist remedy neighborhood difficulties. it's a basic precept of biogeography that species' turnover premiums on islands are better than these on continents. unavoidably, a similar is correct of scientists assigned to paintings on islands.

Wadsworth The ecological dynamics of the four major forest ecosystems of the Luquillo Experimental Forest-the tabonuco, colorado, palm, and dwarf forests-and the dry forest of southwest Puerto Rico have been studied about as thoroughly as any others in the entire tropics (Odum and Pigeon 1970, Lugo et al. 1978, Crow 1980, Frangi and Lugo 1985, Lugo and Murphy 1986, Murphy and Lugo 1986, Weaver 1987, Arendt and Faaborg 1989). These studies have brought to light organisms, biotic and abiotic interdependencies, nutrient and energy conservation capabilities, and vulnerabilities to disturbances heretofore unconceived.

ISince the author presented this paper, the FAO's 1990 Tropical Forest Resources Assessment Programme (referred to below), which describes the situation of tropical forests in 1990 and trends during the period 1981-1990, has been completed (see FAO Forestry Paper no. 112, "Forest Resources Assessment 1990-Tropical Countries"). 18 2. The Status of Tropical Forests 19 It is particularly so in the case of tropical forests for at least two reasons: (1) the concept embodies a very large number of forest types whose definition and range differ according to the authors, and (2) tropical deforestation has become a sensational and politically sensitive subject, making it an arduous task to present it in an objective, dispassionate, and balanced manner.

Its climate has been characterized by the analysis of 400,000 hourly weather readings from nine stations (Briscoe 1966). Five distinct subtropical and lower montane forest life zones have been identified (Ewel and Whitmore 1973). Most of the tree species are widely distributed into Central and South America (Little et al. 1974). Of the heavy rainfall on the upper slopes, some 90% was found to run off the surface into the streams (Institute of Tropical Forestry 1945). The winds on the peaks were found promising for energy production (Institute of Tropical Forestry 1945).
