Since virtues are commonly thought of as dispositions or traits of character that help individuals and those around them to live well, Ivanhoe argues that filial piety ought to be of interest to anyone concerned with reflecting upon and working toward a good life. Nevertheless, certain aspects of traditional accounts of filial piety rely on discredited metaphysical beliefs or conceptual confusions and cannot contribute to a modern conception of filial piety as a virtue. Ivanhoe argues that many traditional views about what children owe their parents for begetting them do not offer an adequate basis for filial piety.
