It wasn’t like that at all, but I was wired a little differently from my parents and my sisters and most of the other neighborhood kids, and for some reason the stories that get passed around at our family gatherings portray me with dollar signs in my eyes. Here’s one: I was nine or ten years old and visiting my grandmother and I wasn’t too happy about it.
