The replacement value of medical center buildings and other health care facilities in the Veterans Health Administration alone is estimated at approximately $35 billion.
The DES specifically provides planning, architectural, engineering, technical, and craft services for the operation, maintenance, alteration, repair, and construction of NIH facilities to ensure the existence and integrity of the physical environment necessary to support the NIH mission. Since FY 1991, NIH has seen a significant increase in its construction budget.
